Lewisham Borough Council, in line with all UK local authorities,
has to improve its waste recycling performance in order to meet
government targets.
A site, on a former gas works, at Bell Green offers the potential
to establish an integrated recycling facility. Mott MacDonald was
asked to produce a conceptual design as part of the planning and
feasibility study.
The concept that has been produced for the Borough Council makes
maximum use of the site whilst ensuring that all activities are
carried out within covered buildings in order to minimise effects
on nearby residents and the environment. Provision has been made
for:
- A reception facility for waste deposited by the public
- A materials recovery facility
- A transfer facility for fly-tipped waste
- In-vessel composting of parks/gardens and kitchen wastes
- Storage of bulk collected recyclable materials
- Storage for containers
- A shop to sell recyclables
- A repair centre for domestic goods
- A weighbridge, offices and canteen
- An education centre and viewing gallery
The innovative nature of the design makes full use of sustainable
construction techniques and the project offers opportunities to
increase the throughput of waste materials and to provide increased
employment in the area, particularly for people with special needs
or disabilities.
